The
Friday Duplicate Bridge Club (FDBC) is located in Pretoria, South
Africa. It is affiliated to the North Gauteng Bridge Union (NGBU)
and the South African Bridge Federation (SABF)
and plays weekly at the Pretoria Bridge Centre.
The club has seen considerable growth over the last few years, and for most of the year we field some 20 plus tables. We usually play this in two sections, each playing the same boards, and then merge the results.
We use mostly pre-dealt boards (computer generated) in order to avoid wasting time in dealing, so that we can get the maximum play into the afternoon.
Our membership includes players of all levels of rank and skill. Notwithstanding, we manage to achieve a friendly and congenial atmosphere, so that players can enjoy their bridge experience.
Members of the FDBC are automatically affiliated to the SABF, and earn masterpoints according to their results at each tournament.
For most club events we have a “playing” tournament director; scoring is done using the Bridgemate wireless scoring system so that preliminary results are available within minutes of the last hand being played. Final results are posted to the web site in the early evening.
In general, after scoring, details of the travellers and personal scoresheets are also made available. Hand Records are also usually available. These are all posted to the NGBU web site. Many players appreciate this service, as it provides details of play that can facilitate any post-mortems of the game!
Most club events are played as match-point pairs. At the 2012 AGM, it was decided that on the last Friday of each month we would score the event using Cross-IMPs, in order to give players some feel for the challenges of this form of the game.
Novice players are welcome. In general we prefer players to come as pairs, but we can always try to find a partner for those who do not have one (contact me first to try and arrange a partner!).
You do not have to be a member to play on a Friday afternoon. You and partner may simply arrive at the bridge centre (in good time), register for the afternoons play and you will be directed to a seat / table. There is however a restriction placed by the SABF that non-SABF members may play a maximum of 6 times at any SABF affiliated club during any calendar year.
Registration is currently R20 for members, R30 for visitors, and includes a short break mid-afternoon for tea/coffee.
Registration closes at 13:35, play starts at 13:45. We usually finish around 17:00 after playing about 27 boards.
NOTE: Registration must close at 13:35, but if you are running late, you can always phone the Bridge Club (012 460 7811) and register, and warn them that you are running late. It takes time to set up big groups, and to configure the Bridgemates, hence it is only possible to accept latecomers if there is already an existing half-table!
Teams, championship, and other events are also arranged during the year.
